THE WALL PROJECT

As Director of Arts and Culture for the 4th District, Kamilla Blanche coordinated and co-curated the Wall Project along Wilshire Boulevard.

In the Fall of 2009, the Wende Museum's archive of the Cold War presented The Wall Project, a permanent public art initiative commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Nearly 40ft long, the Wall Along Wilshire is the longest stretch of the Berlin Wall outside of Germany in the world.

The Wall Across Wilshire, an 80-foot stylised version of the wall, was used to bisect Wilshire Boulevard, one of the busiest thoroughfares in Los Angeles, for the Wende Museum's midnight ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Prior to the ceremony, the Wall Across Wilshire was painted by artists from Los Angeles as well as members of the public. At midnight on November 9th, the Wall Across Wilshire was toppled in front of an audience of more than 1,000 people who gathered on a closed-down Wilshire Boulevard. They were joined by audiences throughout Germany who watched the midnight ceremony on television. This innovative project by executive director of the Wende Museum, Justin Jampol garnered global press coverage.
